New Horizons Community Charter School- English Language Arts Curriculum Info.: |
In Literacy, New Horizons Community Charter School follows the components of Balanced Literacy using the Reading and Writing Workshop model. The curriculum used to deliver this model is the Units of Study for Reading and Writing which is developed by the leading expert in Literacy, Lucy Calkins. New Horizons is a Project School, meaning staff developers from Columbia University collaborate with and support teachers and students in order to help foster continuous growth. The Writing Workshop works much like the Reading Workshop. During the writing workshop, students are invited to live, work and learn as writers. They observe their lives and the world around them while collecting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing well-crafted narrative, expository, and informational texts. |
